Production

The first batch of 24 aircraft was ordered on 15th May 1975. There were no prototypes as such; the first three development aircraft were built in production tooling.

In May 1978 a further ten aircraft were ordered, bringing the total to 34. Conversion training was carried out using the RAF T.4 model, but these lacked Sea Harrier systems. No true two-seat Sea Harrier was ever built.

The aircraft was also ordered by India, which received six FRS.51s and two T.60s in 1983/84.

A second batch of 23 aircraft was ordered for the Royal Navy after the Falklands conflict, and the aircraft were delivered between 1985 and 1988.

India received a further seventeen FRS.51s and two T.60s between 1990 and 1992.

Thirteen FRS.1s were converted to FA.2 standard from the first batch, and twenty-two from the second batch. The third batch of 18 new-build FA.2s was delivered from 1995 to 1998. Seven Harrier T.4s were converted to T.8 standard.
